Day 11: Final day in Tokyo
Monday March 7th, 2011 by Gerald Drenthen
After our ten day stay in Tokyo, everybody got to spent their last day in this big city any way they want. Some participants used the day off to get some well deserved sleep, others got up early to make the most of it. The most popular destinations were Yokohama and Nikko. I visited Yokohama with a small group after spending an hour in the amusement park next to our hostel.
Yokohama is the second largest city in Japan and reachable in about an one hour from our hostel. Before arriving there, we made a stop at the Tokyo Tower and the Zojoji shrine including its surrounding park. Since time was not on our side, we did not spend much time there.
In Yokohama, we started by visiting the Cosmo World, an amusement park with an iconic rollercoaster which dived into the water. After that, we visited the many shopping malls and entertainment areas which Yokohama has to offer.
Nikko is a bit further than a two hours train ride away from our hostel, but I heard it was more than worth the time. The city of Nikko consists of many beautiful gold plated temples and shrines and is adopted in the UNESCO world heritage list. Unfortunately, due to the long travel, there wasn not enough time to see all Nikko had to offer.
When we came back at the station, we walked past the illuminated Sensoji temple for the last time and returned to our hostel to pack our bags for the trip to Nagoya and share the many experiences of the day.
