Earthquake update

We have received some worried messages about our final days in Japan, so we would like to give you extra information about the situation here and the actions taken by the study tour committee.

We have had contact with the Dutch embassy in Tokyo several times the past few days and follow the advices given on their website very carefully. We immediately registered ourselves after the earthquake and they can contact us directly if there should be any reason to leave the country immediately.

The situation at the nuclear plant in Fukushima is of concern at the moment. We are closely following the news regarding the situation and have not seen reason to drastically change our plans so far. The cloud of radioactive material that has escaped today is being blown south. Since we are much more to the west of Japan and current winds here are from the west, there is no direct risk from this cloud for us.

We have of course considered an early departure from Japan, but at this time we are quite sure that there is no time to be gained this way relative to our original planned flight. We have confirmed our booking for the flight on thursday morning and are leaving then. Our airport, Kansai International, is operating normally and has not suffered from the earthquake.

Wij hebben enkele berichten van verontruste mensen gehad over onze laatste paar dagen in Japan, dus willen wij graag duidelijkheid geven over de situatie hier en de stappen die ondernomen zijn door de commissie.

We hebben verschillende keren direct contact gehad met de Nederlandse ambassade in Tokio gedurende de afgelopen dagen en volgen het advies op hun website op de voet. We hebben ons onmiddellijk na de aardbeving geregistreerd en kunnen meteen gecontacteerd worden mocht er enige reden zijn om het land zo snel mogelijk te verlaten.

De situatie van de kerncentrale in Fukushima speelt nu de grootste rol. We volgen het nieuws hierover dan ook op de voet en hebben tot nog toe geen reden gezien onze plannen drastisch te veranderen. De wolk radioactief materiaal die ontsnapt is wordt naar het zuiden geblazen. Omdat wij veel westelijker zitten en de huidige wind hier vanuit het westen blaast, vormt deze wolk geen direct risico voor ons.

We hebben een eerder vertrek vanuit Japan overwogen, maar op het moment zijn wij ervan overtuigd dat er geen tijdswinst te behalen is ten opzichte van de origineel geplande vlucht. We hebben onze boeking van de vlucht van donderdagochtend bevestigd en zullen dan vertrekken. Ons vliegveld, Kansai International Airport, heeft geen problemen als gevolg van de ramp.

Many of you will have followed the disaster situations in Japan over the past few days. In the country itself the media is filled with earthquake news and we are closely monitoring the situation.

Yesterday, as many of you will know, our group stayed in a temple in Nara. Since there was no internet access near the temple, we have contacted parents of the participants via other channels and everyone should know by now that the Satori party is healthy and well. Earlier today, we checked in to our hotel in Osaka, where we will stay until the end of our journey next Thursday. The local population does not seem to have suffered any consequences of the disaster. It looks like we will be able to continue our original program as planned. Concerning the nuclear reactor in Fukishima; we are over 500 km away from the affected area and for now there is no reason to worry about this.

Our group has been registered with the Dutch embassy in Tokyo. Should there be a reason for us to take special action, we will be informed.

We have noticed that, as a consequence of the earthquake, parts of Japan’s telephone network are not functioning properly. This means that it may be difficult to make calls to and from the Netherlands. We do have internet access at our hotel and text messaging works fine. You may also contact the committee, should there be any questions. The telephone numbers and email addresses can be found in the home-stayers booklet. If there is news about the situation, we will post it on our website.

Velen van u zullen de rampscenario’s in Japan via de media hebben meegekregen. Hier in Japan is het uiteraard ook continu in het nieuws en wij houden de situatie ook goed in de gaten.

Gisteren verbleven wij, zoals velen van u zullen weten, in een tempel in Nara. Aangezien daar geen internettoegang was hebben wij ouders van deelnemers zoveel mogelijk via andere kanalen ge?nformeerd en weet u ondertussen dat wij het prima maken. Eerder vandaag zijn wij gearriveerd in ons hotel in Osaka, waar wij tot het einde van onze reis zullen verblijven. We hebben navraag gedaan en hier in de omgeving heeft de lokale bevolking weinig tot niks van de aardbeving en de tsunami gemerkt. Zoals het er nu uitziet kunnen we ons programma gewoon voortzetten en komen we op de geplande tijd weer in Nederland aan. Wat betreft de kernreactor in Fukishima; wij zijn hier ruim 500 km van verwijderd en vooralsnog is er geen enkele reden om hier bezorgd over te zijn.

Onze groep is aangemeld bij de Nederlandse ambassade in Tokio. Mocht er aanleiding zijn voor ons om actie te ondernemen, dan worden wij daarover ge?nformeerd.

Wij hebben gemerkt dat het telefoonnetwerk in Japan als gevolg van de aardbevingen niet goed functioneert, waardoor telefonisch contact met het buitenland soms niet goed mogelijk is. Wel beschikken wij in het hotel over internet en sms-verkeer werkt prima. U kunt de commissie ook bereiken per telefoon of email via de gegevens in de thuisblijversgids. Indien er nieuws is over de situatie hier dan zal dit uiteraard zo snel mogelijk worden geplaatst op onze website.

I would like to let everyone know that all the participants are all right. They were not in the vicinity of the earthquake and are not affected by it. However, the communication networks are having some problems, therefore phones might not work properly.
